Types of Hypnosis
Is One Type Better Than Another?

brainwave-meditation Share

While there are many types of hypnosis, there's only one that stands out from the crowd.  This article educates you about hypnosis as well as reveals...

Your best choice when considering venturing into the realm of hypnosis.

First, though, let's take a brief look at hypnosis itself...

Types of Hypnosis

What comes into your mind when you hear the word, hypnosis?  Do you see a hypnotist swinging that “always present” pendulum at a lethargic person?

Is that person “glassy-eyed” and rather “mummy-like” doing whatever the hypnotist suggests?

Many times, people associate hypnosis with those scenes often flashed in the media where it appears that the hypnotist is this sensational “controller of men (and women!)

Well, let's break those ideas and dig in to something more informative. Contrary to what most people think, hypnosis is not about controlling someone out of their unconsciousness...

Nor is it a “total mind-control” technique that makes people do things against their will.

Clinical hypnosis is very different from what those magicians and entertainers do in the media for entertainment.

Types of Hypnosis

Originating from the Greek term “hupnos,” which means sleep, hypnosis is simply being in a state of self-focus wherein the subconscious mind is made active while the conscious mind is subdued...

Like when you're half asleep or when your mind is off somewhere.

Like driving down the freeway and missing your exit.  That's “highway hypnosis.”

Hypnosis happens to us everyday, and we may not even be aware of it.

Hypnosis allows us to relax and rest our conscious mind. Clinical hypnosis is often done to affect a shift in one’s thought process or behavior.

Did you know that hypnosis has many types? Yes, what we usually see on TV is not at all what happens in reality.

Hypnosis comes in different shapes and sizes – and you can “change your size” by using it for weight loss (which is one of the more popular reasons for hypnosis use.)

While there are many types of hypnosis, I'm going to give you a glance of the general ones.

Traditional hypnotism.

First on the list is traditional hypnotism. This one refers to the age-old idea of just simply talking to the person’s subconscious, and telling the person what to do – given of course, that the subject is willing.

While this can be done to anyone, there are “suggestibility tests” that a clinical hypnotherapist performs to see your degree of absorbing the hypnotic suggestions.

So traditional hypnosis may or may not be effective, depending on your suggestibility.  Sometimes the mind just blocks out “being told what to do.”

There always has to be a reason and a true desire behind the suggestion and the traditional type of hypnosis, depending on the hypnotherapist's ability to excavate that true desire, doesn't always “hit the mark.”

Ericksonian hypnotism

Next, we have the Ericksonian hypnotism. This one uses stories to often correct behavioral problems in children. It either uses a metaphor, a command, or an instruction process, which are incorporated in the story, which reaches through the unconscious mind of the listener. This creates a sort of “reverse psychology.”

This type of hypnotism is perfect for analytical thinkers.

Neuro-Lingual Programming

A more novel entry among the types of hypnosis is the Neuro-Lingual Programming where in this one, thought patterns are injected to the mind which can help in solving problems.

What are these thought patterns?  They can be undetectable “signals” our minds pick up without our knowing they've been “injected.”

One example of this is subliminal advertising where hidden images are placed inside of ads that our minds pick up.  Luckily, in the US, this has been outlawed for use in advertising because it's so effective.

Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis (also called autosuggestion) when done correctly, allows you to take control of yourself and your life.

Here's why it's my favorite form:
  1. You can do it with consistency – which is critically important
  2. It's economical – you can get started with a short course or book.
  3. You can combine many types of hypnosis, including another one of my favorites, subliminal work.
  4. It gives you power to make changes rather than relying on outside people, so it increases self reliance.  You have control over your “inner being.”
All you need is a relaxed mind, a positive attitude, and the initiative to do so! Plus, it’s just like you’re meditating, but with a good intention of making yourself better.

As you can see, with self hypnosis, you have the “power” to impose a sense of self-change and to discover your own best friend – you!
