Why Include Them in Your Gratitude Training?

Mind like a computer to “run a gratitude program” automatically.

Why is this?  Because, if you've read much about how our minds work, it's pretty well proven that our minds adapt to their environments because of something called “neuroplasticity” of our brains. 

So, if you want to have a positive attitude, it makes sense to have positive materials in your environment for your mind to pick up and make adaptations to absorb a grateful attitude.

Words of Gratitude

So, where do quotes of gratitude come into the picture, exactly?  Well, let's say that you get very inspired and make a bunch of gratitude posters and postcards and put them up on your walls around you...

And you consistently spend time focusing on them for 30 days, for example.

After that, your mind wanders and you don't intentionally focus upon them anymore.  Are they still impacting your life in a positive way?

Most likely, yes, because your mind has read them consistently enough to have formed the habit around being grateful because of your “neuroplasticity” attributes.

In other words, it's “adapted” to the new environment of receiving words of gratitude and has initiated new neural pathways and “infra-structure” to support the new “thoughts” of gratitude.

Gratitude Training

It's important to remember when you start making changes in your life, such as making an attitude of gratitude consistent within your mind, that you want to use tools that have a lasting effect.

Quotes about gratitude and other words of gratitude can do this better than a gratitude rock, for example, because once a gratitude rock gets lost or “put in a drawer,” its power diminishes, even though your mind has already made neurological changes from using it.

On the other hand, however, when you “change your environment” and keep it that way for awhile, you don't have to put forth new effort every time you want to feel grace and gratitude. 

Instead, you can begin to trust that your mind has already formed enough of a habit to “seek out” like a missile the quotes of gratitude you have on your walls, even if you're not consciously thinking about them at the time.

This works better simply because they're still up on your walls and less likely to get lost or “put in a drawer” like gratitude rocks, for example.


The key point here to remember is that when you change your external environment for a long enough period of time, your mind responds by building new neural pathways to support the external stimuli.

By adding positive thoughts such as quotes about gratitude to your environment so you see them over a long period of time, you're helping your brain to continue to “react” to the external positive stimuli of “positivity.”

And when you can do this long enough, you gently move yourself up the emotional scale until you reach a constant level of gratitude.
