When you start any type of gratitude training, you'll want to use a variety of methods, one of which is to learn how to seek inner guidance to teach yourself how to develop gratitude on a deeper level. To find this inner guidance, the first thing to do is to get quiet and become aware of what's going on inside of you. Practicing any form of meditation where you “empty” your mind can be a good start because it cuts down on the self talk “mind chatter” so you can become sensitive to your inner voice. But what's the difference between any form of meditation where you're trying to quiet your mind and a gratitude meditation? Let's look at that next?
One way to get yourself “into the zone” of meditation is to repeat a mantra such as “Om.” Using this type of “induction method” focuses your mind on one simple thing so your mind can slow down and become quiet. But, what if you replaced the “Om” with “Thank you?” By doing this, you're not engaging your mind enough to try to “come up with” things to be grateful for, right? You are simply using words of gratitude as your mantra. If you can use this type of mantra well enough to get your mind down into the theta brainwave state (a medium level of meditation,) then inspiration could hit with new ways to learn how to develop gratitude such as creatively using gratitude quotes, gratitude rocks, or gratitude journals. Why is this? Because when your mind is in the theta mode, your brain is in a very creative state of mind as well as producing very beneficial chemicals that keep your body youthful. So, now you know the benefits of meditation, let's look at how meditation relates to doing a gratitude prayer. First, what is a gratitude prayer? Well, it can mean numerous things to different people. The obvious definition would be something like, “Giving thanks to something or someone inside or outside of yourself.” So, that's a pretty confusing definition, huh? Okay, let me explain... If you put a religious affiliation with a gratitude prayer, you're giving thanks to “someone” outside of yourself in the form of a Deity. If you don't “swing with that,” then you could be giving thanks to “The Universe at large.” In either case, however, you're giving thanks to things outside of yourself – unless, of course, you believe you are a part of the Universal flow of energy, which is where I'm going next... If your gratitude prayer is “aimed” at being grateful for “things inside of yourself or for your own higher power whether that power comes from you or is channeled through you,” then your focus is inward and you're giving thanks to different parts of yourself. In any sense, when you are practicing a gratitude prayer, you are engaging your mind enough to be thankful for things in your life and directing this appreciation to an entity or object. Where does meditation fit into this picture? Let's look...
If you can quiet your mind down enough to stop the mind chatter through a gratitude meditation or a brainwave meditation to get your mind into the theta state, you are more likely to be able to think clearly and be inspired about the things that you are grateful for in your life. Once your mind is quiet and clear, it is a perfect time for you to “aim” your thankfulness to the entity or object of your desire by doing a gratitude prayer. This would also be a good time to write in your gratitude journals expressing your appreciation for things in your life. By combining meditation practice with the intentional “prayer” focus, you are more likely to be in alignment with the Universal energy of harmony and more likely to have your thankful attitude and prayer sent out “turbo charged!”
