An affirmation is simply a positive phrase that you practice a certain way (with visualization and emotional feeling) enough that your mind “gets it” and accepts it as the truth.
Since I've already written an article entitled, “What is An Affirmation and What Does It Have to do With the Law of Attraction?” take a moment now and click here to visit that article for a more detailed discussion about words of affirmation. Since we are discussing the definition of affirmations in relation to your self-empowerment, let's take a brief look at answering the question, “What is Empowerment?”
According to Wikipedia, their empowerment definition is: “Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender or economic strength of individuals and communities.”
So, what do words of affirmation do for your ability to “increase your individual strength?”
Is is a “physical strength” like doing push ups, or is it an “intellectual and emotional” strength?
I think the answer to that question is, “both” because when you are able to consistently practice daily positive affirmations for a long enough period of time, you are building up your mental faculties as well as your physical being to be stronger.
Why is this?
Simply because you are focusing your mental energy on positive words and phrases, which in turn give your mind and body a “positive” vibration...
Which, in turn, changes your brain's chemistry to put out more positive chemicals...
Which, in turn, changes your physical body to be “more positive” overall...
Which, lastly, gives you “more strength” to overcome stress, depression and other negatively viewed life factors...
And all of these changes occur simply because you have consistently kept words of affirmation running through your mind long enough to make these mental and physical changes.
In doing my research for this article, I came across quite a bit of “scholarly” material about the empowerment theory, but what it boils down to, if you want to keep it simple...
And you know I like to keep it simple...
Is giving yourself the power to make choices for yourself, rather than retaining the “victim mentality” of not having the ability to make choices that make your life work.
When you're practicing daily positive affirmations or other short affirmations, you are constantly showing your mind and body that you have the power to make choices for yourself and to make change occur.
In fact, I'd say at the heart of an affirmation definition lies your ability to use words of affirmation that “affirm to yourself” that you have the power to do things and make change, rather than “accepting the way life pushes you around.”
I'd like to go one step further and compare words of affirmation and short affirmations as “messages of empowerment” simply because you are continually giving yourself the message that you have the power to manifest your life in a certain direction.
If you've manifested things from doing your daily positive affirmations, you know the personal power you feel that you “did it.”
What could be more empowering than manifesting something simply because you “thought about it" (and visualized it) a certain way?
Part of the empowering process of practicing daily positive affirmations and realizing the change that you seek is to learn how to write affirmations that work.
Here's another article I've written entitled, “How to Write Affirmations and Make an Effective List of Affirmations.” Click here to check out this article because once you know how to write affirmations effectively, you've started your self empowerment process. When you know how to write affirmations that work, can consistently practice your positive affirmations enough to make the changes you desire occur, you have shown yourself, both on mental and physical levels, that you have a certain amount of power in your life.
When you realize that you have this terrific power, the self empowerment “feeling” then grows and grows and you are able to continue to manifest greater and greater things.
